Ten Questions to Ask Yourself Before Committing to a New Relationship

The decision to commit to a relationship is often made on feeling alone, without any real pause for self-reflection. There's no need to turn every relationship into a test, but a little honest reflection before the big step can give you clarity that serves you later.

About the person themselves

  • Do I feel able to be completely myself with him, without watching every word?
  • How does he handle it when he disagrees with me — does he listen, or does he turn to defensiveness or attack?
  • Are his actions consistent with his words over time, not just at the beginning?
  • How does he talk about his past relationships or people in his life? Is there respect, or constant blame?
  • Does he respect my "no," even on small matters?

About the relationship itself

  • Is the pace of the relationship natural, or is there an exaggerated rush toward big decisions?
  • After disagreements, do we reach an actual resolution, or do things just go back to "fine" without ever being resolved?
  • Have I kept my independent life (friends, hobbies, goals) while in this relationship?
  • How did my friends or family react when they met him?
  • If a close friend told me the exact details of my relationship, what would I advise them to do?

There's no "perfect" answer

The goal isn't to find a "perfect" partner with a hundred-percent flawless scorecard. The goal is to listen to yourself honestly, and notice whether there's a recurring pattern in the answers that worries you more than a passing incident. Being clear with yourself is the best protection before any major commitment.

A commitment is stronger when it's built on clarity, not just the feeling of the moment.
